It is difficult to believe, let alone understand, that someone could possibly have a wound that remains unhealed for months or even years.  Yet the reality is many, particularly the elderly or the more vulnerable in our society, are faced with this situation.

So, why does a wound heal nicely in one person and is hard to heal in another?  Wound healing is a complex and influenced by many factors.

Not all health professionals have specialised training in managing hard to heal wounds. However, in all states and territories in Australia there are specialist clinics and/or health professionals who have years of experience and training, and have undertaken extensive study in the complexities of wound healing. They are there to help asses and manage people with hard to heal wounds. The Australian Wound Management Association Members can provide wound care advice to individuals who have undergone Mitrofanoff and other major surgeries.

The Australian Wound Management Association is a multidisciplinary, non-profit association consisting of people who are committed to developing and improving wound management for individuals through education, research, communication and networks.  There are approximately 3,000 members from the disciplines of nursing, medicine, pharmacy, podiatry, industry and the sciences.

Today as never before there is a focus on best practice in wound management to achieve a high quality cost effective outcome for the patient / client and their carers.

Attaining effective wound management through education and support for it's members is the aim of AMWA Inc.
